Having new kitchen cabinets installed is an exciting endeavor, but if you’re new to the process, you may be wondering what to expect. Whether you’re remodeling your entire kitchen or simply upgrading this one aspect of your space, here’s a look into what the process of having new cabinets installed will entail from start to finish.

Discussing Your Vision

Your first step towards having new kitchen cabinets installed is finding a trusted cabinetry expert to work with. A custom cabinet builder will be able to provide tailored solutions that work especially for your lifestyle and kitchen design. During your consultation, your builder may walk you through some basic questions to help shape design plans, such as:

  • Do you have a general design scheme in mind?
  • Which door styles do you find most appealing?
  • Are you seeking any features, like pull-out drawers, a lazy Susan, or other storage enhancements to facilitate your specific kitchen workflow?
  • Which types of woods or finishes are you envisioning?
  • Are you drawn to any accessories, such as under-cabinet lighting?
  • Do you have preferences for hardware style?

You may go over these questions in-store if you’ve met with your builder at a showroom, over the phone, or during an in-home evaluation. Your builders will also need measurements of your spaces to draw up precise plans for your cabinets.

Estimate

Either before or directly after the cabinet builder has drawn up plans to bring your vision to life, they’ll discuss the cost of the project with you. This will include both the cost of the cabinets themselves as well as the cost of labor for site preparation, installation, and cleanup.

Fabrication

Next, your kitchen cabinets will be made. Because custom cabinetry will always take longer to produce than standard cabinets, you can expect to wait a bit longer. The payoff will be worth the wait, however: Once your cabinets are complete, you’ll see firsthand all of the hard work and extreme attention to detail that went into creating your finished product.

Installation

Finally, installation will begin. Contractors will arrive at your home to remove your old cabinets and replace them with the new, upgraded models. They may need to cut the power and water lines in your kitchen temporarily, so plan for a minor disruption during this period of time. Power tools will also be used. It’s a good idea to secure any pets or small children while the contractors work to remove your old kitchen cabinets and install the new ones. When they’re finished, they’ll clean up any mess they’ve made and leave you with a stunning new set of cabinets to enjoy!
